After well over a decade fiddling about with CG, I decided to spend more time studying & practising traditional methods. First of these was a traditional sculpture from life weekend course. I’ve never sculpted a head in real world materials (or from life) before & it was a fantastic learning experience.
I took some work in progress pictures with my phone during the course of the weekend, they’re a little grainy but here they are for anyone interested in the process:
The head was fired recently so here’s the final result:

Received a truly excellent package in the post this afternoon…
Many thanks to Lee Unkrich for taking the time to sign & send me this – I really enjoyed making Alice’s Wonder Remote & this is just lovely icing on the cake.
Needless to say the poster will take pride of place on the wall just as soon as I can get it framed!
I follow a lot of interesting & talented people on Twitter, one of whom is Pixar director & all round chimp fan – Lee Unkrich. A week or so ago he asked if anyone would be interested in helping him out with a little non-profit, non-pixar, personal project. There’s no doubt I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today if it weren’t for Lee & all the other talented boffins/artists at Pixar, so how could I not? Lee got in touch and sent me this sketch drawn by his daughter:
And he asked if I could make it look like a real existing product. So, I set about it & here’s what I got…
I took a few liberties, interpretations (and wild guess work) with Alice’s sketch, so I hope it’s not too far removed from what she had in mind. I have to definitely thank the talented guys at www.productresolutions.com who work next door to our studio & very kindly (and enthusiastically!) gave their input on the design & layout.
I wasn’t the only one who created their interpretation, take a look at some of the other artists work here:

Well, it was Halloween a few days ago & I swore that this year I’d finally get around to carving a pumpkin. It’s something I’ve always wanted to have a go at & for some stupid reason I’ve never actually tried & it was a lot of fun. I had a few ideas for what to carve but how could I not attempt one of the greatest ghosts of all time? Anyway, here it is – the Ghost Pumpkin LeChuck…
After making my first ‘real’ version of AppleBoy (see below), there were lots of things I wasn’t happy with. The proportions of his arms/legs, the shape of the apple & the overall finish. So at the weekend I had another bash & made AppleBoy mk2. There are still things ‘wrong’ with him but he’s much closer to being on-model from my original design. He’s also much smaller standing (lying?) about 5cm high.
I’ve been playing around with some Sculpey recently & thought I’d have a stab at making a real version of my AppleBoy character.
There’s plenty wrong with it, the proportions are all off and the quality of the finish leaves a lot to be desired…
BUT I am learning & will hopefully improve my technique for the next one!

Had a few hours free today so thought I’d update my version of Omni-man from Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker & Ryan Ottley’s excellent Invincible series.
I wasn’t too happy with the overall structure/layout of his features, so I’ve re-jigged things about. As a result I’ve lost some definition in a few areas (things are a little swimmy around the cheeks/jaw) but hopefully I’ll fix these in the next pass.

I’m a HUGE fan of Robert Kirkman and I’ve recently re-read the (amazing) Invicible comic book series from the very beginning… I’ve enjoyed it so much that I gelt inspired to do some fan art, so I started work on a sculpt of Invincible’s Dad, Omni-Man.
Only managed to grab a few hours this weekend to work on him, but thought I’d post what I’ve got so far.

Been playing the new Monkey Island(s), which has got my nostalgia gland firing on full. There is a showdown on the new (and excellent) www.sinistercircle.com forum, So I started to work on a Mike Mignola inspired version of the Ghost Pirate LeChuck.
